West-Papua – Birds-of-paradise

Birds-of-paradise are on the bucket list of many bird watchers but as they are only found in eastern Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and some in northeastern Australia, it is not so easy to see them and you have to travel quite some time. After a cancelled trip to South Africa, I (Jeroen) decided to join the trip to West-Papua with Starling, a Belgian travel agency specialised in nature and photography trips. This tour was mainly focused on, of course the birds-of-paradise, but also other endemic species and families that live on the island. We concentrated on three areas: Nimbokrang (lowlands), Sioubri (Arfak Mountains) and the island Waigeo. In total, 15 different species of birds-of-paradise were observed of which King, Twelve-wired and Wilson’s are the most amazing. More pictures will be added to the website as I go through the more than 10,000 pictures I took during the trip.

If you are interested in this trip, please check the website of Starling as they organise the same trip again in 2019. I can definitely recommend this trip if you want to see birds-of-paradise during a well organised trip with good guides and if you are into some adventure.

Starling – Birding trip Papua birds-of-paradise and other wildlife (link to trip of 2018)

Paradijsvogels staan op de bucket list van veel vogelkijkers maar aangezien ze enkel voorkomen in het oosten van Indonesië, op Papoea Nieuw Guinea en enkele in het noordoosten van Australië is het niet eenvoudig om deze te zien en moet je er vooral lang voor reizen. Na een geannuleerde reis naar Zuid-Afrika besloot ik (Jeroen) mij in te schrijven voor de vogelreis naar West-Papoea met Starling, een Belgische reisorganisatie gespecialiseerd in natuur- en fotografiereizen. Deze trip was voornamelijk gericht op, natuurlijk paradijsvogels, maar ook andere endemische soorten en families die op het eiland leven. We beperkten ons tot drie gebieden: Nimbokrang (laagland), Sioubri (Arfak gebergte) en het eiland Waigeo. In totaal werden 15 verschillende soorten paradijsvogels waargenomen waarvan Koningsparadijsvogel, Twaalfdradenparadijshop en Wilsons paradijsvogel de meest verbazingwekkende zijn. Meer foto’s zullen later aan de website worden toegevoegd naarmate ik door de meer dan 10,000 foto’s geraak.

Indien je geïnteresseerd bent in deze trip, kijk dan zeker eens op de website van Starling aangezien ze deze trip ook in 2019 organiseren. Ik kan deze reis zeker aanraden indien je graag paradijsvogels wil zien tijdens een goed georganiseerde reis met goede gidsen en je ook te vinden bent voor wat avontuur.

Nepal – Chitwan

The next part of our trip was a visit to Chitwan National Park. We stayed in Sapana Village Lodge, from were we did a full day jeep tour, a half day canoe trip & walk and a Elephant ride into the jungle. For both the jeep tour and the walk we had Mukunda Aryal as guide, which we can only recommend as his nature knowledge and ability to spot birds is incredible.

Even though we have some objections against using Elephants for tourist rides, these are treated very well and it’s a great way to get close views of the Indian Rhinocourus without disturbing them.

Voor het volgende deel van onze reis trokken we richting Chitwan National Park. We verbleven in Sapana Village Lodge van waaruit we een jeepsafari (volledige dag) deden, een kanotocht en ochtendwandeling (halve dag), alsook een tocht op de rug van een olifant. Voor zowel de jeepsafari als de wandeling hadden we Mukunda Aryal als gids die we zeker kunnen aanbevelen voor zijn enorme natuurkennis en kunde om vogels te spotten. 

Hoewel we geen voorstander zijn van het gebruik van olifanten voor toeristenritjes konden we wel vaststellen dat deze goed behandeld worden en dat je op de rug van een olifant heel dicht tot bij de Indische neushoorns kan geraken zonder ze te verstoren.

Nepal – Pokhara

The day after the trek was supposed to be a relaxing day at the lake of Pokhara. But we got some info about a good spot for raptors nearby, where they spend the night and take wings once the sun starts to heat the air. So instead of a long sleep, we were in a taxi by 7:30 am and enjoyed a wonderful morning with hundreds of vultures and some eagles. The afternoon was filled with a relaxing walk along the lake.

Na de trekking hadden we een rustdag voorzien aan het meer van Pokhara. Maar we kregen te horen dat er in de buurt een geschikte locatie was waar massaal roofvogels overnachten en ‘s morgens beginnen vliegen zodra de zon de lucht voldoende heeft opgewarmd. Dus in plaats van uit te slapen, zaten we om 7u30 in een taxi en genoten we van een prachtige ochtend met honderden gieren en enkele arenden. In de namiddag genoten we nog van een rustige wandeling langs het meer.

Nepal – Poon Hill Trek

We spent the first two weeks of March in Nepal. Another location that we both had on our bucket list. It wasn’t a top ranking on either of our lists, but somehow we just booked a very classic first-time-to-Nepal-trip.

First came the mandatory visit to Kathmandu, followed by a 5 day trek to Poon Hill. Then onwards to Chitwan National Park on the border with India, to end up again in the Kathmandu valley for the last 2 nights.

The Poon Hill trek stays relative low, with a maximum altitude of 3200m. That is still a hill in Nepal. But at least you get to see 2 of the 10 tallest mountains in the world, being Dhaulagiri (8167m) and Annapurna (8091m). The trek itself is mostly in forest dominated by Rhododendrons.

De eerste twee weken van maart brachten we door in Nepal. Een bestemming die voor beiden op onze bucket lijst stond. Het stond niet hoog gerangschikt maar om één of andere reden hebben we toch maar een klassieke eerste kennismakingstrip naar Nepal geboekt.

Eerst brachten we een verplicht bezoek aan Kathmandu, gevolgd door een 5-daagse trekken naar Poon Hill. Vervolgens trokken we richting Chitwan Nationaal Park aan de grens met Indië, om opnieuw te belanden in de Kathmandu vallei voor de resterende 2 nachten.

De Poon Hill trekking blijft relatief laag, met een maximum hoogte van 3200 m. Wat dus nog steeds een heuvel is in Nepal. Maar je krijgt er wel 2 van de 10 hoogste bergen ter wereld te zien, zijnde Dhaulagiri (8167 m) en Annapurna (8091). De trekking zelf loopt grotendeels door bossen gedomineerd door Rhododendrons.

2017: Kungsleden

Somehow we didn’t post once in 2017, but still did some nice trips. The first of the year was a cross-country skiing trip in the North of Sweden: the Kungsleden. Enjoy !

Door allerlei redenen, hebben we in 2017 geen enkele post gemaakt, maar toch hebben we enkele fantastische reizen achter de rug. De eerste was een cross-country ski trekking in het noorden van Zweden: de Kungsleden. Enjoy !

Alaska – The End

It has been an amazing 24 days in Alaska and we already have plenty of ideas to spend another couple of weeks here but unfortunately no more holiday. So we need to come back one day to this magnificent state of the USA, however, we still have a long bucket list! 🙂

De afgelopen 24 dagen in Alaska waren fantastisch en we hebben al een hele waslijst aan ideeën om nog een paar weken te vullen in Alaska maar helaas hebben we geen verlof meer. Dus moeten we ooit maar eens terugkomen naar deze fantastische staat in de VS, alhoewel, onze ‘bucket list’ is nog lang!

Alaska – Kenai Peninsula

Kenai Peninsula, the final destination of our trip, and again different from what we have seen before. After 3 weeks, we can summarise Alaska, besides nature and wildlife, as follows: lots of small airplanes, lots of small boats, lots of fishing and they love making a camp fire.

Kenai Peninsula, de laatste bestemming van onze reis, en opnieuw anders dan wat we tot nu toe hebben gezien. Na 3 weken kunnen we Alaska, naast natuur, samenvatten als volgt: heel veel vliegtuigjes, heel veel bootjes, veel vissen en ze houden ervan een kampvuur te maken.

Alaska – Humpback Whales

One of the most spectacular things we have ever seen: two humpback whales jumping out of the water just in front of us!!! Just amazing!

Eén van de meest spectaculaire dingen die we ooit gezien hebben: twee bultruggen die vlak voor ons uit het water springen!!! Fantastisch!

Alaska – Valdez

We stayed a couple of days in Valdez along the coast in the southeast of Alaska, unfortunately during the busiest weekend of the year due to the 4th of July (Independence Day). Nature and wildlife is amazing and keeps surprising us. Already the road trip from Glennallen to Valdez is worth the trip but than comes the huge amount of bald eagles and the trip in the Prince William Sound to Columbia Glacier, the second largest tidewater glacier of North America.

We verbleven een paar dagen in Valdez langs de kust in het zuidoosten van Alaska, jammer genoeg tijdens het drukste weekend van het jaar gezien de nationale feestdag (4 juli). De natuur is fantastisch en blijft ons verbazen. Alleen al de rit van Glennallen naar Valdez is de moeite maar dan komen nog de vele Amerikaanse zeearenden en de trip in Prince William Sound naar de Columbia gletsjer, de tweede grootste gletsjer onderhevig aan getijde in Noord-Amerika.

Alaska – Richardson Highway

Into the wild… We start to understand how it would feel like being on your own in the complete wilderness of Alaska. The nature and wildlife are impressive and from time to time we are speechless. And we only see a small part of it… The last couple of days we have spent in the more remote part of Alaska although it is still accessible by car but only a few tourists make the complete tour like we do. No internet or phone signal, just nature!

Into the wild… We beginnen het stilaan te begrijpen hoe het moet voelen om helemaal alleen in de wildernis van Alaska te verblijven. De natuur is indrukwekkend en af en toe worden we er zelfs stil van. En dan zien we enkel een klein deel… De laatste dagen brachten we door in het meer afgelegen deel van Alaska hoewel dit nog steeds bereikbaar is met de auto. Maar slechts enkele toeristen maken de volledige rondrit zoals wij dit doen. Geen internet of gsm ontvangst, enkel natuur!
